Pregnancy is one of life's most extraordinary experiences, and one of its most physically demanding. As your body works to support new life, it's also carrying a heavier load than it ever has before: shifting posture, aching hips, swollen ankles, and a lower back that never quite gets a break. Prenatal massage in Vaughan is one of the most effective ways to find real, lasting relief during pregnancy and at Health Matters Chiropractic Centre, it's something our registered massage therapists are experienced in providing safely and comfortably.

Whether you're in your first trimester or counting down the weeks to your due date, this guide covers what prenatal massage is, what it can help with, and what to expect when you come in.

What Is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage, also called pregnancy massage therapy, is a form of massage specifically adapted to the needs and positioning requirements of pregnant clients. Unlike a standard massage, it accounts for the changes in your body's circulatory system, centre of gravity, and areas of heightened sensitivity.

At Health Matters, our RMTs use positioning, pressure, and technique that are safe for all trimesters. Sessions typically involve side-lying positioning with supportive pillows and bolsters, ensuring you're comfortable from the moment you settle in. The goal is always to support your body, not push it.

It's worth noting that massage therapy during pregnancy is considered safe and effective by most health authorities when provided by a registered massage therapist with appropriate training. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada supports complementary therapies as part of integrated prenatal care, and the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario sets the regulatory standards our RMTs meet and maintain.

What Prenatal Massage Can Help With

Pregnancy changes your body quickly, and the discomforts that come along with those changes are real. Prenatal massage therapy is particularly effective for:

Back and hip pain. As your belly grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward, placing extra strain on your lumbar spine and hip flexors. Many of our Vaughan patients find that regular massage therapy significantly reduces chronic lower back tension during pregnancy.

Sciatic nerve pain. The sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle, which can tighten considerably during pregnancy as the uterus expands. Targeted soft tissue work around the hips and glutes can relieve pressure on the nerve and reduce radiating pain down the leg.

Swelling in the legs and feet. Pregnancy increases blood volume and can slow venous return, leading to edema — swelling — especially in the lower extremities. Gentle massage promotes lymphatic drainage and circulation, helping to reduce puffiness and discomfort.

Neck and shoulder tension. Postural changes happen gradually throughout pregnancy, and many people carry extra tension in the upper back and shoulders without realizing it. Addressing this early can prevent headaches and stiffness later on.

Stress, anxiety, and sleep disruption. Research published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies has shown that prenatal massage can reduce cortisol levels, improve mood, and support better sleep — all of which matter enormously in the months leading up to birth.

Who Provides Prenatal Massage at Health Matters?

Our registered massage therapists, Marina Battaglia and Carl Pinter, bring a combined 42 years of clinical experience to every session. Marina has been an RMT for over 17 years, 14 of them with our team, and holds active standing with both the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and the Registered Massage Therapy Association of Ontario. Carl holds an Honours B.Sc. in Physiology alongside his RMT designation, a level of academic grounding in how the body works that informs everything from assessment to technique selection.

Both practitioners work within a multidisciplinary environment at Health Matters, meaning your prenatal care doesn't happen in isolation. If you're also seeing Dr. Renzoni for chiropractic care or acupuncture during pregnancy, our team can coordinate your care so every modality is working toward the same goal.

When Can You Start Prenatal Massage?

This is one of the most common questions we hear. The general guidance is that massage therapy is considered safe from the second trimester onward for most pregnancies. Some practitioners also work with clients in the first trimester, with appropriate modifications and a conversation about any risk factors.

As always, we recommend checking in with your midwife or OB before beginning any new form of bodywork during pregnancy, not because massage is risky, but because every pregnancy is different. If you have any concerns or pre-existing conditions, we're happy to work in partnership with your prenatal care team.

What a Session Looks Like at Health Matters

Your first prenatal massage at our Vaughan clinic starts with a brief intake conversation — understanding where you're carrying tension, how far along you are, and what you're hoping to get out of the session. From there, you'll be positioned comfortably using supportive cushioning, and your therapist will work at a pace and pressure that feels right for your body that day.

Sessions run 30, 45, 60, 75, or 90 minutes depending on your needs and energy levels. Many of our patients find that 60-minute sessions hit the right balance of thorough work and comfort, though this varies throughout pregnancy. Your therapist will check in throughout to make sure everything feels good.

Importantly, extended health insurance in Ontario typically covers registered massage therapy, including prenatal massage, so be sure to check your plan before your visit. Many patients are surprised to find their sessions are partially or fully reimbursable.
